5 things I’ve been up to in the past 2 years.

It’s been a while, eh? Like – two years? I mean, it’s fine. I’m sure you have all been checking this site regularly for my latest update.

Never fear, I’m alive. and well.

Most people do like, weekend recaps? Right? Well. You’ll get a two year recap in five pictures.

1. I got married.

Obviously this is the biggest life change because, hello, I literally combined lives with someone and changed my last name. We got married on September 5th, 2015. I know, I know. It’s the greatest day of your life! But really, for real, it is. And not just because you get married. I mean – my husband is the coolest dude. But you are surrounded by like 200 people who are your closest friends – many of which (especially in my case)  I don’t get to see very often. Y’ALL, IT IS AWESOME. I want to have a wedding again just so I can see my friends. We honeymooned in St. Thomas and loved it so much that I’m still asking Cliff if we can move there.

2. We bought a house.

HOLY MOLY. Marriage didn’t change much – but buying a house???? No one told me that cutting grass in 100+ degree heat was a requirement. Also, in case you were wondering, grass does not grow well in sandy ground. Having a house is the bomb.com, and we were lucky enough to get a great deal on a move-in ready, used-t0-be-the-model house..but we have a lot of projects to do (decorating wise, mostly). So you’ll be seeing lots of fun things about that in the future, I’m sure!

3. Moses!

Moses has been an incredibly bright spot in our lives! We adopted him March 19th (in case you want to send him a present next year…) from a local shelter after his elderly owner had to give him up. I saw him on Facebook and within 5 minutes had called and put us on the waiting list to adopt him – we were the first ones! I went to visit him later that day, and I brought him home to our family two days later. Cliff actually didn’t even meet him since he was out of town – he just trusted me. Mo is incredibly hilarious and patient with us as we love on him obnoxiously and make him take photos he doesn’t want to take (he’s quite the model, though.) We’re not quite sure of his age – the shelter said 10, the vet says more like 8. He acts 3. It’s all very confusing. Mo has pretty bad allergies so we opted to give him immunotherapy shots every few days..he’s a trooper. His favorite activities include sneaking up onto the bed and couch, adventures on the beach, catching the tennis ball, and snoozin’. Also, chasing after the UPS and FedEx man and scaring off small puppies (He’s a grumpy old man.).

4. We traveled to Hong Kong.

Y’ALL. Hong Kong is the COOLEST. Cliff & his family lived there for a few years growing up (back when it was a British territory) and so they decided they wanted to show me all their old stomping grounds this Summer. I was terrified. I was also convinced I wouldn’t be eating for a week (I called it the “HK Diet”) because new foods are scary, but the experience was SO cool and if it wasn’t so incredibly far away from our families, we’d probably move there. It’s a big city surrounded by water AND mountains. Hi, yes please.

5. I changed my mentality.

13512154_10102224837879148_7134437725707308795_n

This isn’t actually fully true…but I’m actually REALLY still working on this…because it’s tough. I go to work in the wee hours of the morning and get off around noon. The weekdays are HARD. Between keeping up with work, attempting to have a social life, keeping the house clean, running errands, being half-responsible for feeding someone other than just myself..keeping up with it all is actually really rough on me. I kind of hit a slump after we returned from our honeymoon. My job has GREAT benefits – but it between the news and how stressful/depressing it can all be..and the hours..it’s rough and it really started to take a toll on my mind and body. Right now, I’m still working on the mind thing. I am pushing myself to do more after work, to explore more, to say yes to social activities even when I know I’ll be tired at work the next morning – because the work-nap-dinner-sleep thing just doesn’t work for me. I used to be SO social and fun, and this shift has kind of taken that out of me, so I’m trying to fight that. We’ve taken a lot of little trips lately and try to kill the monotonous daily routine by switching up what we do everyday once Cliff gets off work..so we’ll see how this works out.

So- that’s that…two years down. What have you been up to?! I’m hoping to keep this blog regularly updated, so cross your fingers that you’ll hear from me again in less than ten years…

XOXO
Laura

Good morning, Sunshine.

Well hello there.

I’m fairly new to this blog thing (obviously). I’m not really honestly, fully, positively sure how it works. But I like writing, so that’s a good thing, right? Honestly, all of this is really because I have a terrible memory and a desire to memorize everything. Unfortunately my hand disagrees with me and gets tired of writing after like, a page.

Okay. Anyways.

I guess I should introduce myself, right?

My name is Laura Marie and I’m 26 but I somehow still catch myself telling people I’m 22. I’m a TV News producer in Wilmington, NC (also known as the Port City…hence, the blog name.). I like sleeping (more on that later), pretending I exercise more than 3 times a month, traveling, all things Southern, and reading. I know. I’m basically the most exciting person ever. But to be fair, I wake up at 2:14 in the morning. So I five days a week, I’m too tired to do more than mope around.

Yes.You read that correctly.  I wake up at 2:14am.

I’m the one who produces the news show you watch every morning while you sip your coffee and attempt to drag your kids out of bed (or your dog or yourself or your pet rock, I don’t know.) It’s not as bad as it sounds.  I work with really great people and morning news is often a little more light-hearted than an evening newscast. Plus, I’m off work before many people take their lunch break.

SO ANYWAYS….You want to hear more about my life story? No? Oh. Sorry.

I was born in Ohio. Then I moved to North Carolina with my family (I’m the youngest of four!) when I was 8. After high school, I bounced around from place to place…I attended my first 1.5 years of school at Appalachian State University, then decided it was entirely too cold and transferred to the University of Georgia. From there, I lived in Wilmington, then Birmingham, AL, then Raleigh, aaaaaaaaaaaand now I’m back in Wilmington again.

So why did I do a loopty-loo? Well, I took my first job here in the port city because the station I had interned at the summer before I graduated had an opening and offered it to me when I graduated. Then, I moved to Birmingham to work in a bigger TV market. While I was there, I finally admitted to myself and the world that I was totally into this dude:

10639498_10101331284916448_8684600972147451921_n

His name is Cliff and he’s pretty stinkin’ great. We met in Wilmington (yep) while working at the same station. He liked me for oh, a really long time and I refused to date him (that’s a different post for a different day.). After I made a few visits back to visit Wilmington, he somehow agreed to do the whole long-distance thing for seven months. He was in Greenville, working at a different TV station as a sports anchor. So we made a lot of trips back and forth between Birmingham/Greenville. A LOT. Anyways, after a while I moved to Raleigh so we would be about an hour away. Then, at the end of August, he received an offer outside of the news-biz here in Wilmington. I’m fortunate enough to work for a really great company that allowed me to transfer to our Wilmington newsroom. So we moved here. Together.

So that’s that. Can I officially call myself a blogger now? I promise I’ll try to update regularly. I’ll try not to gloat too much about living at the beach.

Questions, comments, concerns? Text me, beep me, if you wanna reach me. (just kidding, I’m totally not giving you my phone number.)

Obviously this whole sha-bang is off to a great start.

See yah.
Laura
